a Bass family road trip to find the old Fenton Saw Mill
the location that Kevin's grandfather grew up
and his many stories of the "old" days
riding his horse and carrying a rifle on his own easily by 12
raising bear cubs who'd eat eggs by tapping a hole in the shell and sucking out the egg
fishing and being chased by a bull
jumping creeks with cars
trapping foxes and other wildlife
and it would turn out Kevin is at least a 4th generation Albertan, an extremely rare find seeing that most of our grandparent are immigrants, but for Kevin his grandfathers' grandfather farmed this area when Warren was growing up
After studying many maps of the back country and various hiking areas, a road trip with grandpa last year, a followup camping trip by Cory this year to hike the land around many cattle gates
the location of the Saw Mill was finally located and we got to explore the land Kevin's grandfather tells us so much about
and it's beautiful
lots of cattle as we make our way slowly through this back country on bouncy, muddy roads with many cow patties
(endless cow patty jokes in the Bass truck)
these cows didn't love our presence
they bellowed at us as we made our way slowly through their pasture land
The dead crooked tree in the center was fondly recalled by Warren, being a familiar landmark
it's no longer living and now has some tree friends, but there is not another patch of trees on this hillside and it was definitely unique and interesting to look at
the teeny cute cabin was Warren's first rental home when he was 1 year old, they had stayed in a tent until winter came and then rented this tiny gem with another family near the top of a hill
Warren takes us down to where the actual mill was located and his home, the mill is where the people are standing, located down the hill from his first little cabin
it was beautiful day in beautiful countryside with a lovely picnic lunch
