i will remember

the secret treats you'd bring back from the candy store for us, the like-m-aids and candy necklaces, you'd sneak them to us like we were committing a secret crime from mom and dad, making it all the more enjoyable - they knew didn't they?

you'd catch fish on your line and let us help you reel it in, such a unselfish act so you could share something you loved with people you loved, oh the hours you'd all spend untangling us

oh boy, remember the popcorn perch?  you sat watching us giggling away catching those silly things and you'd whip them up in the morning or for a late snack for everyone, mom always said you were the best at making them, i didn't eat them, but you took care of the dirty part every time (the cleaning, yuck) and who wants to do that,
well you did of course

one night you and i stayed up all night,
you taught me everything i could want to know about all the hooks in your tackle box
you knew exactly what they'd do and what they'd catch and you showed me,
all the colours and fun fuzzy, slimy thingys seems so much more interesting that night
i had to race back to my trailer in the dark and scared and then sneak in, worried dad would be mad if I woke him
you hosted "he man woman haters" coffee again that morning and it was our little secret
i know as a adult that it probably wasn't a secret how late we were up, but it is to me
a special time i can tuck away just for me

you didn't hesitate to jump out your chair the day of the water fight, not just any water fight, the mother of a water fight
i don't know how it started for sure, but I do know that you flew out of that white plastic chair at the edge on 'camp worthington" and right into the deep end of creek (probably to get me back) and we got each other just drenched, splashing like crazy
i couldn't get you nearly as wet as you got me of course, you were so powerful throwing that water up at me
you didn't complain you were wet, you didn't complain it was too cold,
you just lived in that moment with me
we laughed so hard we couldn't breathe, that was a lot of fun wasn't it?

my favorite times as a kid were camping and you were always there, (remember with that big plastic glass of kool aid, YUM, or the mother bowl of popcorn)
i am thankful for those times and those memories
for what you taught me in your own way

i will not be there, because of my love for you
my memories will be happy ones, not sad ones and i will remember how i loved you
i will honor you by doing what we loved to do with you, not reliving the sad day you left
i will remember these things and many others of you and about you,
